The old Witting mines take visitors on a journey back through centuries of mining history. The area is believed to be the only freely accessible historical mining site of its kind in Finland, where centuries-old mining heritage can still be experienced in its original setting. An easy-to-walk nature trail leads visitors through this unique cultural heritage site, making it an enjoyable destination for the whole family.
Explore the Witting Mining area
The old Witting mines are located approximately 10 kilometres from Ylistaro towards Ilmajoki, around 15 kilometres from the centre of Ilmajoki towards Ylistaro, and only about 25 kilometres from Seinäjoki.
At present, 21 mine pits of varying sizes are known within the area. During recent years, another 5–6 previously unknown mines have been discovered, and ongoing research continues to reveal new mine pits.
A nature trail of approximately 1.7 kilometres winds through the beautiful forest landscape from one mine to another. The trail is easy to walk, although it is not fully accessible. However, it is wide and relatively even, making it suitable for visitors with prams or strollers.
During the summer, almost all mine pits are pumped dry. Winter maintenance is generally not provided. Visitors can also explore the rhodonite mine more closely by using the metal staircase leading into the mine.
The area also includes a recreational site, Pietarus swimming area, located next to the main parking area at Könnintie 978. Facilities include a barbecue area, a volleyball court and a public sauna, available for a small fee. Toilets are also available. Please bring your own firewood if you intend to use the barbecue area or sauna. There is no electricity available on site.
